The Split brain

چکیده
1. Terminology The term split-brain has several meanings. Applied to the human, it denotes complete sectioning of the corpus callosum, an operation which is usually performed for medically intractable, multifocal epilepsy (Reeves and Roberts, 1995). In the experimental animal, such as the cat or monkey, it usually implies both callosal section and a split optic chiasm; this makes it possible to restrict visual information to one hemisphere merely by covering one eye. In the human with intact chiasm, restriction of visual input to one hemisphere requires restriction of the visual stimuli to one or the other visual hemifield. Our split-brain patients had complete cerebral commissurotomy (including anterior commissure, dorsal and ventral hippocampal commissures, and, in some cases, the massa intermedia). But it is now common to use the term split-brain to refer to cases of complete callosotomy alone, since they manifest most of the same signs and symptoms.

متن کاملSensory and motor involvement in the enhanced redundant target effect: a study comparing anterior- and totally split-brain individuals.
This study investigated the redundant target effect (RTE) in partial split-brain (anterior section sparing the splenium), total split-brain, and neurologically intact individuals. All completed an RTE protocol in which targets were presented on the midline or in an inter- or intrahemispheric manner. Stimuli of different nature (luminance, equiluminant colour, and global motion) were used separa...
متن کاملHemispherectomy vs commissurotomy in the monkey: one hemisphere can be better than two.
Split-brain cats using a single hemisphere show impaired performance on a variety of behavioral tasks. This has been attributed to a loss of cortical mass action. To test this proposal in primates, performance on a nested match-to-sample task was compared in split-brain, hemispherectomized, and normal monkeys. As expected, split-brain monkeys using a single hemisphere performed worse than norma...
متن کاملCross-cuing mechanisms and ipsilateral eye-hand control in split-brain monkeys.
It was proposed that split-brain monkeys are able to perform ipsilateral eyehand response because the seeing hemisphere can cross-cue the blind hemisphere, which is in major motor control of the arm, by orienting toward a point in space and, thereby, allow for the bilateral registration of head, neck, and eye position. In the present study, accuracy of ipsilateral eye-hand response was measured...
متن کاملBinocular rivalry in split-brain observers.
During binocular rivalry, visual perception switches between a stimulus viewed by one eye and a different stimulus viewed by the other. We studied rivalry in split-brain observers to test two explanations. Rivalry could reflect switching of activity between the cerebral hemispheres, or switching by a structure in the right frontoparietal cortex. From these two theories, we predict no rivalry wh...
متن کاملDynamic circuitry for updating spatial representations. III. From neurons to behavior.
Each time the eyes move, the visual system must adjust internal representations to account for the accompanying shift in the retinal image. In the lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP), neurons update the spatial representations of salient stimuli when the eyes move. In previous experiments, we found that split-brain monkeys were impaired on double-step saccade sequences that required updating acr...
